Throwback Thursday: D'Angelo- "Lady"

I know it's been a while since I've posted a throwback joint but I had to make sure I posted one this week. When I choose a song for throwback Thursday I try to think back to my junior high and high school years and the music our generation listened to. You know those songs that every time the song came on the radio or even the video(back when they actually showed the WHOLE video) that you had to stop everything and listen/watch or even worse you had your tape ready in the radio or VCR so you could record the song lol. The days when someone had an album you liked and you said "aye let me dub that tape."

D'Angelo's 1996 hit "Lady" was definitely one of those songs you dubbed. It's lyrics talk of a man who isn't afraid to profess his love for his lady and he knows everyone is hating but he doesn't care. Lady was the epitome of how to mix a jazz, r&b,soul and neo-soul sound all into one. A song that every woman wished their man would dedicate to them. Many sight Erykah Badu as the person who originated the neo-soul sound, but one can argue that it was D'Angelo. Many may forget about D'Angelo and the impact he had on music but D was definitely that guy from 1995-2000. He did win two grammys and let's not forget his ever so popular collabs with Lauryn Hill and Raphael Saadiq.

You may be asking, "Where is D'Angelo now?". Since 2000 D'Angelo hasn't done any interviews or performances. He's been featured on 3 songs in the past 9 years. I take it his legal issues and struggles with drugs and alcohol have a lot to do with that. Rumors has it that a new album is coming from him soon. A few halfway finished songs have leaked on the net but nothing official. It definitely would be nice to hear some new material.

There hasn't been any recent pictures of D'Angelo but I hope he still doesn't look the way he did back in 07 smh #jesustakethewheel
