For this week's Throwback Thursday I chose Usher's 2001 hit "U Don't Have To Call" off his 3rd album 8701. The Pharrell written and Neptunes produced track was the 3rd single off the album and reached #3 on the billboard 100 charts and also earned Usher a grammy for Best Male R&B Performance in 2003. The video features a cameo from Diddy and also Usher wearing the popular shoes Heelys, which are sneakers with wheels on the bottom like roller skates. The video is also very popular for it's dance routines specifically the routine Usher does as he's stepping off the elevator. Every time this song came on everyone always did that routine lol. Memories.
Many people criticize Usher saying he isn't the same as his 8701 and Confessions days which is very true but I don't think he deserves criticism for that. It's like your comparing a guy who was in his early and mid 20's without any children to a 32 year old father of two and ex husband. People do mature and grow as they get older and if you listen to the album Here I Stand it was a perfect reflection of where he was in his life at that time. A married man and a father. True artist sing what they feel not just what sells. #message. He still to me is the best R&B SINGER out there and he is definitely an Icon and a tough act to duplicate. Fact is til this day Usher can sell out an Arena while other folks can barely sell out a theatre with standing room only tickets. #message
