The Game's star Tia Mowry recently was guest editor for Vibe.com. On her guest editor day she shares her experiences on Sister Sister, The Game cancellation, photos from her & her husband's superbowl party, how she transitioned from a child star to an adult actress and more. Check out a few excerpts below:
On the signs that your show is being cancelled:
When we were in The Game’s third season, I noticed there were things with the production that were changing. That’s usually the first sign of a show being in trouble whether it’s premature on not. Even on Sister, Sister there were production costs within our sixth year. That’s the first sign that you see when you’re discussing cancellation. We were never told anything. Ordinarily you would have a nice spread for food for the actors [from craft services] and show staff while you’re working. But slowly and surely it became just peanut butter and jelly. Usually they give wardrobe more money to spend to do shopping for clothes, but then we found ourselves wearing the same clothes and just finessing different ways of wearing them. Or usually we would do more outside shots, which costs more money, but we weren’t doing any of that anymore.
On finding out BET was interested in The Game:
We first found out BET wanted The Game when we were still on the CW. There was a write up in the Hollywood Reporter that said if The Game was canceled by the CW, BET wanted to pick it up. And we were like, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it, but that would be awesome.’ But after the show ended, nothing happened for a whole year and a half. Everything was very hush. Pooch Hall ended up booking a job and so did Coby [Bell], and I ended up doing a movie and a pilot with the Style Network along with my sister, Tamera [Mowry]. This is how we make a living, so we’re moving on with our lives. But I always knew in the back of my head and in my heart that something was going to happen with The Game. It didn’t feel like we had closure.
On Sister, Sister :
There was a particular time about this period of my life that really stood out for me. I was going to school, attending Pepperdine University and working at the same time. (And to this day I still look back at my college papers and reread those 25-page papers!) I remember working on Sister, Sister and doing volunteer work in the huge hematology oncology department for children who had cancer. I think I had to do 24 hours of volunteer work. It was a great experience for me because after being in class I had to work and after work I had to go to school and write papers. I remember Tamera and I being on a train in London headed to France. And [we were] studying for school [at the same time], because we had to promote Sister, Sister in Paris. That was our lifestyle at that time and I really loved it.
