Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A man that was an inspiration to many and devoted his life to fighting for the rights of all mankind. This past December I had a chance to visit Morehouse College where Dr. King graduated from. It was a great experience.

Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" To Be Added To Library Of Congress

The Library of Congress announced the 25 films on Tuesday that will be among the selections to be preserved in its National Film Registry. Among the chosen is Spike Lee's 1992 biography "Malcom X," which cast Denzel Washington as the Civil Rights leader, as well as a 1959 film dramatization titled "Cry of Jazz" which depicted the origins of jazz, expressed through Black and white actors holding varying points of view.The National Film Registry began in 1989, with an intent to preserve films with artistic, cultural or historical meaning. There are over 500 films being preserved by the registry including classics such as "Toy Story," "Rocky," and "Shaft."

Black History Lane

1884- The telephone was invented by Granville T. Woods. His invention was far more superior to the invention of Alexander Graham Bell.

1923- Roland Hayes became the first Black to sing in the Symphony Hall in Boston. The 1917 concert did not attract much public attention, but another in the same venue held on this day, was triumphant.

1969- M.V. Brown designed a "Home Security System with Television Surveillance" for the homeowner to view the visitor on a television screen and the visitor also able to view a screen. The homeowner could open the door via a manual lock mechanism. Patent No. 3,482,037 December 2, 1969
 
1975- Ohio State running back Archie Griffin becomes the first person ever to win the Heisman Trophy twice. He went on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals and was elected to the National Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

Black History Lane: Today is the 55th Anniversary of Rosa Parks Bus Incident

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks did not intend to change the course of history when stepped on the No. 2857 bus after a long day at work, on December 1, 1955. But that is exactly what the woman many call ‘the first lady of the civil rights movement' did with her refusal to give her seat up to a white man.

Her subsequent arrest and the boycott that ensued was a pivotal springboard in America's civil rights movement and led to a United States Supreme Court decision that declared the Alabama and Montgomery laws requiring segregated buses to be unconstitutional. Today (December 1) marks the 55th Anniversary of the event that sparked it all.

Parks later received a bounty of honors and awards for her pioneering efforts in the civil rights movement including the Congressional Gold Medal, the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP and the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by former president Bill Clinton. In 1999, Time magazine named Parks one of the 20 most influential and iconic figures of the twentieth century.

Rosa Parks died of natural causes at the age of 92 on October 24, 2005 but her legacy lives on.

Black History Lane

1872: Macon B. Allen was elected judge of the Inferior Court of Charleston. Allen, the first Black lawyer, thus became the second Black to hold a major judicial position and the first Black with a major judicial position on the municipal level.

1895: National Negro Medical Association founded.

1911: William Henry Lewis was appointed assistant attorney general of the United States by President William Howard Taft, making him the first Black appointed to a sub-cabinet post

Black History Lane: This Day in Black History

This is a new section of my blog I'm starting entitled "Black History Lane". Here I will post significant events that happened in black history on said day. Although this is mainly an entertainment blog, I also want you to be able to come here and gain some type of knowledge of our history. There are so many "Black" entertainment blogs out, but I haven't seen one yet that posts anything other than gossip, or who was where and wore what. I feel as if you can mix both. Especially if a person has heavy traffic to their blog. Why not try and educate young black people a little and not just give them an outlet to fill their heads with a bunch of nonsense? With that being said I am VERY BIAS about what I post. I'm not going to post a bunch of foolishness. Ok moving along.

THIS DAY IN BLACK HISTORY:

1865- Mississippi passed the so-called "Black Codes" that barred blacks from jury service, testifying against whites in trials, bearing arms and attending white schools.

1866- Rust College in Mississippi was founded.

1880- Southern University was established.

1892- The first Black football game college football game was played between Biddle University and Livingstone College.

1897- J.L Love patents the pencil sharpener.
